Michael Furchert's aunt

We have a big family and we are really united. Before the Berlin Wall was built, we used to gather for every special ocasion: christmas, new year's eve, anniversaries, birthday parties, everything. My brother, Michael's dad, always said the prayers for us and our belief in God is what always made us be a strong family.

I couldn't believe our family had been separated like that; it killed me inside to know I couldn't get to see my brother, his wife or even my nephew. We spent months apart since the wall was built and I really missed them all during that time. When my husband and I got to know they were trying to get the approval to cross the wall, we prayed every single night for them. I knew my parents would be really upset if their own son was not present during their 60th anniversary so when I got to know they were coming to spend a day with us, I was full of joy and excitement.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's been years since the wall was destroyed. I'm old now but the memories will never leave my mind. I remember how grateful we were when we could spend a day together in spite of the wall that had divided us but the best moment of my life was when I could see my family happily together and know that there was nothing dividing us anymore. I will always be grateful to the man that allowed my brother to cross the wall, but even more to God, who made us come together again.
